Things to Do on the Bolivar Peninsula & Crystal Beach

27 miles of Gulf Coast possibilities. Whether you're here to do everything or absolutely nothing, this guide will help you plan your perfect days — from beach bonfires to birding sanctuaries.

Your Bolivar Peninsula Adventure Guide

This isn't a resort. It's not a theme park. It's something better: 27 miles of unspoiled Texas coastline where the beaches are wide, the people are warm, and the pace is exactly as slow as you want it to be.

Beach Life

Drive on the Beach

One of the best things about Crystal Beach — drive right on the sand to find your perfect spot. 27 miles of open shoreline means you'll always find a quiet stretch.

You'll need a Bolivar Beach Parking Sticker ($10/year at The Big Store). Speed limit: 15 mph.

Beachcombing & Shelling

The shoreline is excellent for shells, sea glass, and treasures. The Gilchrist area on the quieter east end is a sheller's paradise — especially at low tide or after a storm.

Beach Bonfires & S'mores

Small contained campfires are allowed in designated areas. S'mores, storytelling, and a sky full of stars with the sound of the waves — a Bolivar Peninsula must-do.

Always extinguish completely before leaving. No glass on the beach.

Sunrise & Sunset

Here's a rare treat — the peninsula's geography lets you catch sunrise over the Gulf in the morning and sunset over East Galveston Bay in the evening. Both are spectacular.

Fishing & Crabbing

Surf Fishing

Cast right from the beach for redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and black drum. The jetties near Bolivar Roads Pass and East Galveston Bay are prime spots.

Texas saltwater fishing license required — buy online from Texas Parks & Wildlife.

Guided Fishing Charter

Book a trip with our partner Capt. Doc's for a real local fishing experience. Equipment, boat, and expertise included. Perfect for experienced anglers and first-timers alike.

See our Experiences page to book through your guest platform.

Crabbing

A fun activity for all ages. Drop a crab line or net from a pier or the shoreline and see what you pull up. Kids especially love this — hours of entertainment guaranteed.

Nature & Wildlife

Birding at Bolivar Flats

One of the best birding spots in North America. The peninsula sits along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and is a Globally Important Bird Area. Roseate spoonbills, pelicans, egrets, and hundreds of migratory species.

Spring migration season is especially spectacular. Also visit High Island Rookery.

Dolphin Watching

Dolphins are frequently spotted from the Galveston–Bolivar Ferry, along the shoreline, and near the Intracoastal Waterway. Keep your eyes on the water — they love to play in boat wakes.

Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge

Just a short drive away — 37,000+ acres of coastal marsh and prairie, home to alligators, waterfowl, and incredible wildlife. Great for a nature walk or quiet afternoon of exploring.

Local Attractions & History

Point Bolivar Lighthouse

Built in 1872, this iconic landmark has survived 150+ years of storms. While you can't go inside, it's a beautiful sight and a must-visit for photos. Located near the ferry landing.

Fort Travis Seashore Park

70-acre historic military site on the peninsula's western tip with bunkers and batteries from the late 1800s. Shaded picnic areas, wetland overlooks, and a playground. Part history, part nature walk, part adventure.

Bunkers are open to explore during Spring Break season.

Galveston–Port Bolivar Ferry

Completely free, runs 24/7, takes about 20 minutes. Even if you didn't take it to get here, it's worth a ride for dolphins, pelicans, and gorgeous bay views. Connects to Galveston's Strand District and Moody Gardens.

Wait times are short on weekdays. Summer weekends: expect 30–60+ minutes.

The Gulf Range Mini Golf

18-hole tropical mini golf course plus yard games, Giant Jenga, arcade, and made-to-order pizza. The course lights up beautifully after dark. All-day pass around $15.

Golf Cart Cruising

One of the most popular ways to explore Crystal Beach. Rent from Jay's or Crystal Beach Golf Carts. Driver must have a valid license. Carts allowed on roads with 35 mph limit or less.

If parking your golf cart on the beach, it also needs a parking sticker.

Fun Spot Waterslide

A local favorite for kids and families looking for a splash when they want a break from the beach. Simple, fun, and exactly what the little ones want on a hot day.

Things to Do in Surfside Beach

Our Surfside Beach homes put you on a different stretch of the coast — about an hour from Houston, with four miles of pristine shoreline, a legendary jetty, and a quieter village atmosphere our guests love.

Surfside Jetty Park

A 4,300-foot granite jetty extending into the Gulf. Walk the pathway for stunning views, cast a line for redfish, sheepshead, and trout, or watch cargo ships and dolphins. One of the top fishing spots on the Texas coast.

Drive on the Beach

Just like Crystal Beach, you can drive on the sand at Surfside. Annual Pass: $30 at local businesses. There's also a beautiful pedestrian-only beach section for a quieter, more secluded experience.

Surfing

As the name suggests, Surfside Beach is known for some of the most consistent waves in Texas. Head near Texas Street for the best breaks. Need gear? Check out Breaker Sports for rentals.

Bird & Butterfly Trail

Surfside holds a Bird City and Monarch Gateway designation. During peak migration in April and October, the area comes alive with roseate spoonbills, sandhill cranes, herons, and countless species.

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge

Over 300 bird species recorded. Hiking, wildlife photography, and the chance to spot alligators and rare migratory birds. A nature lover's paradise just outside Surfside.

Fort Velasco

History buffs: the first shots of the Texas Revolution were fired right here near Surfside Beach — not at the Alamo. Visit the replica fort and museum with dioramas, vintage rifles, and artifacts.

Sea Center Texas

About 15 minutes away in Lake Jackson. Interactive marine exhibits, touch tanks, aquarium, and a working fish hatchery. Free admission and a fantastic family outing.

Splash Pad Park

Perfect for little ones. Freshwater park that gives kids a break from the saltwater while you relax nearby. A hit with families during the warmer months.

Bluewater Highway Trail

A three-mile concrete footpath through town. Walk, run, or bike past restaurants and rentals — an easy way to explore the village car-free.
