No separate camping permit is required beyond this sticker. You can pick one up at The Big Store (2385 State Hwy 87, Crystal Beach) and at several other local businesses along the peninsula.
Contained campfires and cooking grills are allowed. Bonfires are not. Fires must be no larger than 3x3x3 feet and kept at least 10 feet from the dunes. Extinguish completely before leaving or sleeping.
General Rules
Do not park in a way that obstructs beach traffic. Watch the tide line before you set up. High tides, especially during strong weather, move significantly. Position your site closer to the dunes, but stay off protected dune areas. Dogs are welcome on the beach on a leash.
Where to Camp
The entire 27-mile stretch of the Bolivar Peninsula is open for camping, but a few areas stand out. Crystal Beach is the most central spot, with easy access to The Big Store, restaurants, and fuel. It is the most popular stretch and gets crowded during summer weekends and holidays.
The Flats, at the west end of the peninsula, has wide open beach with fewer houses nearby. Quieter and more open than the Crystal Beach area, and a good option for anyone who wants more space.
Near High Island, at the east end, the beach narrows but is significantly less visited. Good choice for birdwatchers or anyone who wants minimal company.
What to Pack
A few things that make the difference at Crystal Beach specifically: Long tent stakes. Wind is consistent on the peninsula and picks up at night. Standard stakes pull loose in the sand.
Bug spray. Insects are a seasonal issue, particularly at dusk during warmer months. Fresh water. There are no freshwater hookups on the beach. Bring enough for your stay. Firewood or a contained grill. Collecting driftwood is common, but having your own supply means you are not dependent on what washes up.
Trash bags. There are trash containers along the peninsula, but pack-out is the expectation. What you bring in, you carry out. A tide chart. Check before you set up and before you sleep. NOAA’s tide predictions for the Bolivar Peninsula are available free online.
Restrooms and Showers
Porta-potties are scattered along the peninsula and are maintained regularly. For full restroom facilities, the Bolivar Beach Pavilion on Crystal Beach Road (behind the fire station) has restrooms available to beachgoers. The Big Store also has public restrooms.
A rinse-off shower is available at the Galveston County facility at 941 S. Crystal Beach Drive. There are no public shower facilities directly on the beach.
